Is cellulite really caused by obesity? Can I get rid of cellulite by simply losing weight?

More than 90% of women have cellulite problems. Although cellulite usually happens to aging women, there are girls as young as 14 years old having the cellulite too. According to some studies, people who aren’t obese also have cellulite. Obesity is definitely not the only cause of cellulite and weight loss might not even solve the problem!

Cellulite is basically caused by the tiny fat cells under the skin. These cells are pushed upward above and form tiny bumps above the skin. The following are what causes cellulite:

Lifestyle. At most time, cellulite are caused by poor diet habit, lack of exercise, smoking, etc. Lack of exercise will affect blood circulation, venous and lymphatic systems and cause weight gain which worsen cellulite problem. Cigarette smoke contains free radicals or highly charged oxygen molecules that will indirectly cause inflammation and leaking to vein and capillary walls. Nicotine will also reduce microircultation.

Hormones. Progesterone and estrogen is one of the biggest reasons of cellulite. Estrogen plays an important role in the determining location and the number of fat cells in the body. It promotes fat cells to develop and grow around breasts, buttocks and thighs. Progesterone can cause weight gain, weak veins and fluid retention.

Pregnancy. During this period, there is a surge of hormones and these hormones weaken connective tissues. The growing womb will also reduce circulation and lymph drainage.

Stress. It could increase the surge of adrenaline which might lead to increased fat storage in hips, buttocks, stomach and thighs.

Obesity. Obese people have the higher chance of getting cellulite, which is the form of fats. An overweight body will cause fat accumulating in the cells and worsen the appearance of cellulite.

Other causes can be liposuction, pelvic surgery, harsh massage, enlarged lymph nodules and even fashion (clothes which are tight will promote cellulite because it limits the blood flow in the body).
